  Ryskamp Grants cover the costs of regular travel between New Haven and Farmington, during the  academic year,  in support of senior essay research in the Library’s collections. Students are also offered overnight accommodation in the Timothy Root House, as necessary, to facilitate their use of the Library’s collections, and consultation with Library staff and other researchers present who might be able to assist them with their research.   Contact Information: For further information about the Ryskamp grants and application process, please contact Susan Walker, Head of Public Services at the Lewis Walpole Library  (susan.walker@yale.edu)

The Lewis Walpole Library encourages applications for its 2017 Graduate Student Summer Fellowships, which support research of up to two months in the collections of the Lewis Walpole Library. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, with priority given to applications received before March 1.   Graduate Student Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Library in Farmington, Monday to Friday, at least, throughout their tenure at the Library. To facilitate this, they are provided with no-cost accommodations in the Library’s Fellows quarters, on the Library’s grounds.  Application is made through the Yale Student Grants and Fellowships Database, starting October 23, 2017.  Final application deadline is April 23, 2017.

Blurb about the exhibition…….. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Lewis Walpole Library will be sponsoring a series of Master Classes for Yale graduate students, as well as two public lectures.  For details, see the Events calendar. The Lewis Walpole Library, based in an historic estate in Farmington, CT, was a gift to Yale University from Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis (Yale 1918) and his wife, Annie Burr Lewis, to be a center for eighteenth-century studies at Yale. The Library holds the largest single collection of books, manuscripts, and objects related to Horace Walpole, as well as the  largest collection of British satirical prints outside of the UK.  The Lewis Walpole Library is open for research by appointment; it’s exhibition gallery is open to the public every Wednesday from xx to xx.

Strawberry Hill, a “gothic” fantasy just outside of London, is one of the most famous houses in the world,  and it’s creator, Horace Walpole, were the inspiration for what came to be one of Yale University’s most unique and remarkable treasures, the Lewis Walpole Library, located in Farmington CT.  ….. Join us for a fascinating tour through the history of this unique home, it’s miraculous restoration, and the ongoing search for its contents, leading up to a major exhibition in 2017, in celebration of Horace Walpole’s 300th birthday.
